I had a good reminder this past weekend. My church was deciding on a team that could possibly become our new church leaders. There was much passion as people gave opinions and shared their feelings. As the results were read there were many sad faces and many content faces and I am sure hurt feelings as the team did not win and the church was now off to find new candidates.
As I drove home and sorted out my thoughts on the morning, I remembered the words of one of the ministers. He gave us some warm and poignant words. He said whatever happens, it is what is supposed to be. How valuable these words are when we stress over world issues, and politics and comments by friends and family. It is up to us to find a way to continue in the act of living that is fruitful and rewarding. We can stay angry and voice the hurt and wrongdoing we think is or was being done. We can internalize and worry and keep ourselves up all night. Who are we helping? More importantly who are we hurting? Will we be the recipients of illness and stress issues, will we be the ones on medications or self- medicating ourselves.
The lesson I feel we need to learn is the self discovery process of finding peace in what is. What is the peace of what is? Is it about my finding understanding in a process I may not understand? Is it about learning to accept and finding new ways to make changes? Or is it about being still, taking in what has happened and believing even if I don’t know why it is life will go on and I can continue to be a happy productive person.
Try this today; take a few minutes and breathe in and out a few times, let your mind relax, just let your thoughts pass through without stopping to examine them. As you do this look around. If you are outside or near a window what is happening? Is there a tree to admire or a cloud floating by? If you are at home or in your office can you focus on something that is attractive a picture, plant or well-made object. Look at what “is” as you observe your mind moving. Life all around us is happening, we will do well to stop and realize this moment is perfect.
